Sewing Class

So. It was a Sunday night. We were at home, as usual, surrounded by (read:drowning in) fabric. (When your mom owns a fabric store and designs clothing and runs both businesses out of your house, by default, you love fabric from a very young age. The alternative is to go crazy. BUT they look pretty sane, yo? So let's all agree that they are bonkers for a good jacquard. But, PLEASE, don't tell the playground bullies.) So anyhoo, there we were. Sunday night.
Nothing to do. (Honestly, I have nothing to do? Schyeah right. I meant I had nothing I FELT like doing) So, we decided to start some jammy pants
. Now, we have made some projects together. I mean, the boys make a mean marble bag out of scraps. But a full blown project?! Requiring MORE than a yard from the stash?!
It makes
me sweat just typing it out. I love my fabric and I personally love using it - but I really am just not a great share-er. I know, there should be an exception when referring to sharing fabric with my offspring. Ummmm, yeah, but no. I hate to share my fab fab. Especially if I am going to have to sit back and watch it get mangled - I mean SEWN - by an inexperienced 9 (or 8) year old sewing boy. BUT motherly feelings prevailed, and we got started. It was fab. It was fun. Ok, it was nerve wracking. But, they sewed. And they serged (they called it doing surgery LOL) and they resisted the urge to pull the fabric through - and there-by mess up my differential feed - like CHAMPS.They cut, they pinned, they sewed some more- oh my gawd, SO crooked - but so carefully :) No trips to the emergency room required, either. Brighton knocked my two pair of $100 (each!) finely engineered German dressmaker shears together like flint and stick and made like he was going to start a fire..... and I didn't even faint ----- > at that point, he WAS downgraded to the fiskars until I can find it in my heart to trust him again.So. The pants are not done. But the fabric is cut. The legs are mostly sewn together. And I still love my sons. They are going to be great little tailors. But, I think to salvage my sanity and our relationships, its going to be best for all of us if they start their own stash. Really, it makes sense, yo? I'll even give them a wholesale discount and NO minimum order :)
